Secret Codes Not Fiction

Recently I’ve been blogging about the impact of the “conversos” on world history. The conversos were Jews who were forcibly converted to Christianity in Spain and Portugal in the 15th century. Most of them led double lives. The Inquisition was constantly on their tracks, trying to discover their secret “Judaizing”, for which they paid with their lives. Some of the earliest colonists in New Mexico, for example, were conversos. Think about it, why would anyone leave the comfort of Europe to go to the New World? Why would anyone take a chance with his own and his family’s lives to go to a harsh, new environment? Many conversos made the journey so they could practice their Jewish beliefs freely. In the course of their double lives, they left secret messages as to their true beliefs. Some of these even made it into the Sistine Chapel, the “Michelangelo Code”, if you will.

Some doubt that the converso codes exist. They think that anything involving code breaking is Dan Brown type fiction. But in Portugal researchers have found new and as yet undeciphered converso codes: http://forward.com/articles/175207/secret-codes-left-by-portugals-expelled-jews/
