Our Film Premiere on HBO

Our film “Tales From the Organ Trade” is creating an international debate on the way we are presently dealing with kidney transplants. Basically, people who need them are dying, while kidneys are available from people who are willing to sell. Until now, all we have done is criminalize the selling and buying of kidneys. The question is: is there a way to regulate the process so that sellers don’t die from a lack of aftercare, and buyers don’t die while waiting for kidneys that never become available. My co-producer and director Ric Esther Bienstock has crafted a film that dramatically explores what she calls “the moral ambiguity” of the situation. The film is now putting the issue where it belongs – at the top of the global health agenda.

The film was screened on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the prestigious venue of The New York Academy of Medicine. The screening was sponsored by HBO and the Global Bioethics Initiative. Major players on the issue were there ranging from Interpol to nephrologists to hospital administrators to prosecutors. The screening went extremely well, the debate was lively and there are rumours that a European parliament is going to invite Ric to address its members.

It’s time that the dying stopped. This is a problem for which there is a solution. Watch our film in the US:
