Voices From The Past

Mikveh from Coimbra, Central Portugal
Mikveh from Coimbra, Central Portugal

Recently, I’ve been writing about the modern descendants of “Conversos” i.e., those Jews who were forcibly converted to Christianity in the 15th century, during the inquisition on the Iberian Peninsula. I’ve pointed out, for example, that Rafael Nadal, arguably the best tennis player in the world, is of Jewish converso descent, both on his mother’s and his father’s side. You can read more about this here.

Now there has been an interesting find in Portugal that echoes the country’s Jewish past – a Mikveh, a Jewish ritual bath that was just unearthed in the city of Coimbra.
